Involutions on Tori with Codimension-one Fixed Point Set
The standard P. A. Smith theory of p-group actions on spheres, disks, and euclidean spaces is extended to the case of p-group actions on tori (i.e., products of circles) and coupled with topological surgery theory to give a complete topological classification, valid in all dimensions, of the locally linear, orientation-reversing, involutions on tori with fixed point set of codimension one.
متن کاملFixed Point Sets of Fiber-preserving Maps
Let F = (E, p, B;Y ) be a fiber bundle where E, B and Y are connected finite polyhedra. Let f : E → E be a fiber-preserving map and A ⊆ E a closed, locally contractible subset. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for A and its subsets to be the fixed point sets of maps fiber-homotopic to f . The necessary conditions correspond to those introduced by Schirmer in 1990 but, in the fiber...
متن کاملDirect limits and fixed point sets
For which groups G is it true that whenever one forms a direct limit of left G-sets, lim −→ i∈I Xi, the set of its fixed points, (lim −→I Xi) , can be obtained as the direct limit lim −→I (X i ) of the fixed point sets of the given G-sets? An easy argument shows that this holds if and only if G is finitely generated. If we replace “group G ” by “monoid M”, the answer is the less familiar condit...
متن کاملFixed-point tile sets and their applicationsI
An aperiodic tile set was first constructed by R. Berger while proving the undecidability of the domino problem. It turned out that aperiodic tile sets appear in many fields, ranging from logic (the Entscheidungsproblem) to physics (quasicrystals). We present a new construction of an aperiodic tile set that is based on Kleene’s fixed-point construction instead of geometric arguments. This const...
متن کاملFixed Point Sets for Permutation Modules
Let A = kG, the group algebra of some finite group where the characteristic of the field k divides |G|. In contrast to working over the complex field, the kGmodules are not usually semisimple. If a Sylow p-subgroup of G is not cyclic then there are infinitely many indecomposable kG-modules, and we usually enjoy little control over the category of such modules. It is therefore an important probl...
